Module Information

This subject provides in-depth knowledge about modeling and simulation concepts in green buildings. Starting with climate analysis and the passive design aspects of a green building, you will be taken through hands-on stage-by-stage simulation tasks to demonstrate the impact of solar geometry on a building’s façade and its indoor spaces. The simulation includes site analysis, solar radiation analysis, shading design, overshadowing, airflow, and the envelope thermal transmittance value (ETTV) of a building’s facade as well as studying ventilation using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software.

Project Brief

We are to design a student center in Temasek Polytechnic. In order to do so, we have to do a site analysis, concept design, simulations for solar, shadow, and CFD.

Through this module, I have learned about integrating different designs to cater to the weather and condition of sites using simulations. The pictures above are the steps we did to get to the end product that is being shown in an A1 panel.

First had to do a site analysis of the site that we were assigned to do. Our goal was to find an area in Temasek Polytechnic where we can build a student center. Our group chose to do it at Garden fiesta which was on top of Macdonalds and other eateries. We did an analysis of where the wind would come from , where is the access to the site, where the sun is coming from , find out what are the existing buildings that are near and the vehicular access to site.

Next we had to do a concept design, we had to think of multiple idea and try to implement them into our building design. I wanted my building to be more naturally ventilated and have a very opened theme. I had the idea of a loft space and adding small spaces like meeting rooms underneath.

Next we had to start creating our whole building in Revit, it was an interesting experience for me, creating the facade design and the loft area and ways to allow the building to have more wind flow. After that we started on our A1 panels where we had to use simulations to justify our designs. My main justification was the wind flow so i had to focus on wind flow simulation in BIM HVAC.

Overall, I have learned quite a lot from this project. I was able to learn how to use all my skills from previous modules and implement it into a overall sustainable project.
